Hermann Häberlin (1862-1938) came from a political family in Thurgau. In 1892 he founded a private gynaecological clinic in Zurich; in 1920 he was elected into the city council. As a city councillor, Roederstein painted him frontally in 1921 in the style of Holbein in front of the inscription 'Salus publica suprema lex' (Barbara Rök: Ottilie W. Roederstein (1859-1937). An Artist between Tradition and Modernity. Monograph and catalogue raisonné (Marburg 1999), no. 1214).
