Frauenakt vor Landschaft

Several preparatory drawings for this nude have been preserved (Barbara Rök: Ottilie W. Roederstein (1859-1937). Eine Künstlerin zwischen Tradition und Moderne. Monographie und Werkverzeichnis (Marburg 1999), nos. 239, 345-347, figs. 184-186). According to Rök, the painting was possibly created in collaboration with Karl von Pidoll; like Roederstein, the latter had a studio at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut and imparted to her the art of his teacher Hans von Marées, of whom the figure's reference to the landscape in particular is reminiscent.
