The portrait of wine merchant and devotee of the Mormon Church Jacques Daniel Frédéric Ursenbach (1794-1892), called Fred, was painted shortly after Vallotton's arrival in Paris in 1885. It was exhibited the same year at the Salon and earned him a 'Mention honorable' at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Inspired by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' 'Portrait de M. Bertin', the portrait was the starting point of Vallotton's artistic career.
