After the two historical landscapes of 1904 with Pentheus resp. the Satyrs and Maenads, Vallotton is here for the first time attempting a mythological figure image. He takes up an episode from Ariosto's 'Orlando furioso' (1516/1532, 10th song, 111 f.), which he already treated in 1896 in his only woodcut of literary content. On the hippogryph Roger comes flying over and saves Angelica from the dragon that wants to devour her. Vallotton is likely to have referred to the picture of the same subject by Ingres (1819; Paris, Louvre).
