Annette (*1898) and Jacques Roussel (*1901) were the children of the painter Kerr-Xavier Roussel and his wife Marie, Vuillard's sister. We see them here doing their homework in the apartment on the Rue de la Tour, where Vuillard lived with his mother.
Around 1946, the dealer Fromager cut off the back with a sketch-like portrait of Suzanne Desprès (Antoine Salomon/Guy Cogeval: Vuillard. The Inexhaustible Glance. Critical Catalogue of Paintings and Pastels, 3 vols. (Milan 2003), no. VII-420).
