Profil dʼhomme barbu

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres1780 Montauban – 1867 Paris
We have 3 artworks by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres online.
We have 1654 paintings online.
Ingres painted this sketch in Rome, the model was probably a peasant whose name is unknown today. Considered by Delaborde in 1870 as a study for the figure of Oedipus in 'Oedipe et le sphinx' (1808; Paris, Louvre), a connection with the genesis of 'Jupiter et Thétis' (1811; Aix-en Provence, Musée Granet) going back to 1806 might be far more likely (Tinterow 1996). The sketch was later acquired by Edgar Degas (1834-1917).
