Copy of a portrait of a woman (c. 1504/09; Paris, Louvre) by Giovanni Francesco Caroto (c. 1480-1555). In 1985, the discovery of the original signature allowed the painting, controversially discussed by art history, to be attributed to this Veronese painter. Previously it had been attributed to painters such as Lorenzo Costa, Lorenzo Lotto, Bartolomeo Veneto, Andrea Solario or Antonio Boltraffio and was mistakenly considered a portrait of Isabella d'Este. In his true-to-scale copy, Degas transformed the linear-plastic structure of the model into the picturesque, altering the colours in the process.
