After completion of his main work, the 'Windsbraut' (Kunstmuseum Basel), Kokoschka began work on this still life in December 1913, which he completed in April 1914. This allegorical work reflects Alma Mahler's decision to terminate the pregnancy with their child. The cat bears the features of Alma, Kokoschka's first great love, who portrays himself in the form of a rabbit; the putto is probably intended for the unborn child. The figure of the boat driver in the background can be interpreted as 'Charon' and as vision of the underworld.
