Arnold Böcklin1827 Basel – 1901 San Domenico bei Fiesole
We have 18 artworks by Arnold Böcklin online.
We have 1654 paintings online.
Second version of the pictorial idea, cf. the preparatory works, Inv. 777 and 1286. Compared to the first version, the group is reduced to three figures, probably War, Fury or Plague and Death, and the city no longer has an antique but a medieval character, a change that goes back to Böcklin's visit to Nuremberg in 1896. By 1898 at the latest, Böcklin began to express his pessimistic vision in the composition 'The Plague' (Kunstmuseum Basel), which also remained unfinished.
