The borgo in the middle section is inspired by Civita Castellana. A composition study in oil is in the Louvre (Alfred Robaut: L'oeuvre de Corot. Catalogue raisonné et illustré, 5 vols. (Paris 1905), vol. II, no. 2459 B). Together with the 'Bridge of Narni' (Ottawa, The National Gallery of Canada, inv. 4526) as Corot's first submission, shown in the Salon of 1827 as 'Campagne de Rome'.
