cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution
About the provenance
Edgar Degas painted this work back in 1860, but retained it right up until his death in 1917. His niece and heir, Jeanne Fèvre, did not put this and other works from the artist’s estate up for sale in Paris until 1934. Via a Parisian art dealer, it was then acquired by the French industrialist and art collector Robert Ellissen. Ellissen was persecuted by the Nazis as a Jew. In June 1944, the work was seized at Château Raba in Talence near Bordeaux, by a Nazi organisation that systematically looted art and cultural property from occupied countries during the Second World War. After the war had ended, the work was returned to the family and sold no earlier than 1959 by Robert’s son, Jean Ellissen. It entered the Kunsthaus Zürich in 2005 from the bequest of the former Kunsthaus Director René Wehrli.
