The first war of Kappel, the beginning of the religious fights in Switzerland, ended in 1529 with a peace treaty, after the outposts had fraternized as old comrades in arms. The milk soup, to which the Catholic mountain people contributed the milk and the Zurich farmers the bread, is already mentioned in the earliest sources, for example by Johannes Stumpf, who took part in the war campaign. From his chronicle, Bullinger quotes the saying (recoreded on the frame 'they do not forget the old friendship') in his history of the Reformation, probably Anker's immediate source. The creation of the picture is based on an outline etching by Gabriel Lory ('Le repas champêtre. Canton de Lucerne'), on the depiction of the Kappel episode by Johann Georg Volmar and on a drawing by Ludwig Vogel.
