Painted in June 1888. In February 1888 van Gogh moved from Paris to Arles. The actual breakthrough to the bright, intensive colourfulness that made him the forefather of European Expressionism was triggered by his stay in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer from May 30 to June 3. After his return, he converted two drawings of simple huts into paintings: Here, for the first time, he fully exploited the extreme contrasts of blue-orange, red-green, white-black, in deliberate exaggeration.
