Vincent van Gogh1853 Zundert – 1890 Auvers-sur-Oise

The painting, which shows a couple planting potatoes, was created around 11 April 1885 in Nuenen, a small town in Brabant. The painter sketches it in a letter to his brother Theo dated around 11 April 1885; on 9 April he had made a small pen-and-ink drawing with variants (both Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh).
