The dark idol with his phosphorescent eyes and long cat-like hand is known from 'Manaò Tupapaú (The Spirit of the Dead Watching)' (Buffalo, Albright-Knox Art Gallery), a major work from Gauguin's first stay in Tahiti: if there the dark eerie sphere is contrasted with a girl's nude, here it appears behind the veil of flowers and the bright red-orange of the foreground.
