In March 1913, at the invitation of Georges Hasen, Chocolat Cailler's representative in Russia, Vallotton traveled to St. Petersburg, painted a portrait of him (Ermitage), and made sketches from which he developed five cityscapes of St. Petersburg and Moscow after his return.

About the provenance
Félix Vallotton’s La Néva gelée remained in his possession in Paris until his death in 1925. It is catalogued as no. 51 in the artist’s estate and went to his brother Paul Vallotton, owner of the eponymous gallery in Lausanne. The work was loaned to the Kunsthaus Zürich by the Vallotton gallery in 1965 and was ultimately acquired for the collection in 1977 with funding from the art collector and patron Walter Haefner. This means that its provenance can be retraced continuously from the time it was created by the artist until Walter Haefner donated it to the Kunsthaus. Consequently, the possibility that it constitutes cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution can be ruled out.
