Albert Kollmann (1837-1915), a merchant in Hamburg, was a devoted and unconventional patron of artists, first of Liebermann, later of Munch and Barlach, cf. inv. 1945/19. His portrait was commissioned as an 'immediate aid'; in 1904/06 he also created a double portrait with Sten Drevsen (Kunsthalle Hamburg) and an etching (see Munch und Deutschland (exh. cat. Hamburg 1994), Ingrid Mössinger/Beate Ritter/Kerstin Drechsel (ed.): Edvard Munch in Chemnitz (Cologne 1999; = exh. cat. Chemnitz)).
